ASIS Austin Chapter Chatter Vol. 1 Issue 4
A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD
ASIS Austin Chapter,
It has been an unprecedented year of volunteerism and growth in our Chapter. When the existing Board was elected three years ago, our Chapter was hovering around 35 local paid members. In 2020, we saw increased interest in virtual event participation and saw growth even in the face of the global pandemic. We are thrilled to announce that our local membership has soared to over 100 members in 2021. We cannot thank you all enough for your support and participation in this Chapter!
We have also been able to populate our entire list of 2022 Volunteer positions for the first time in Chapter History. We appreciate these volunteers as experts in their fields, value the time they pour into our Chapter, and believe that they will strongly build the Chapter’s Communities.
- Membership: You may have spoken with Ken Roe about your Membership locally; we are thrilled to have Ken as part of the Chapter and expect great things for him and the Membership Community moving forward.
- Programs: Ron Mendell is working on a robust Programs schedule for the Chapter in 2022 as our Programs Community Chair; if you have ideas on educational sessions, let Ron know!
- Women In Security: Bernadette King is handing over the reins of our wildly successful local Women In Security Community to Mindi Partin; we know we’ll see this community have many more successful events and conversations next year.
- Communications: Laura Karim leads our Communications Community with a strong involvement in our Newsletter and other event communications. Laura’s enthusiasm for the Chapter is unmatched; we’re happy to have her as part of the team.
- Law Enforcement: We hope to see our Law Enforcement Liaison, Tricia Mirabelle, CPP LCC at an in-person meeting next year; as the current Director of Operations / Commander for the Pflugerville Police Department, we understand she’s busy!
- Military: Jared Bruno joined the team this year as our Military Liaison; if you know any military members looking for best practices to transition to the private sector, Jared is an incredible resource.
- Social Media: Hugh Tullos, APP SHRM-CP, joined us mid-year as our Social Media Coordinator with gusto; having someone at the helm of our Chapter’s Social Media profiles as engaged as Hugh is a blessing.
- Certifications: Anthony Hurley’s goals for 2022 include re-engaging study groups as our Certifications Community Chair. Anthony is a triple Crown CPP PCI and PSP; he is your best local resource for any certification question.
- Young Professionals: Laura Rodriguez will lead our local Young Professionals Community, taking Erika Becker’s place. We look forward to engaging even more YPs in Austin in 2022 and have faith that Laura will reach new benchmarks for success in this role.
- Website Administrator: Robert Garcia has graciously offered to help us with our website, so we look forward to providing you with more great content in 2022!
Our Board for 2022 will have mostly new faces, and we look forward to watching them succeed in the coming year. We encourage you to connect with them and keep the lines of communication open with how they can best meet your needs through ASIS Austin.
- Chair: Erika Becker, APP, ACP
- Vice-Chair: Aaron Jamieson, PSP
- Secretary: Ray Carreira
- Treasurer: Matthew Johnson, CPP
It has been an honor and pleasure serving on your ASIS Austin Board, thank you for everything. We wish you individually, and the Chapter as a whole the best of success moving forward.
Sincerely,
Your ASIS Austin Board
QUARTER IN REVIEW
We have had an extraordinary quarter of events and chapter meetings, and are so thankful so many members were able to join us! 2021 was a year of in-person events that were refreshing and educational, and we closed out the year strong! We are looking forward to continuing this trend in the coming year!
OCTOBER
In October, we hosted our second Women in Security event for the year, focusing on Mastering Negotiations: How to Get What You Want, Need, and Deserve. We had a fantastic webinar and were thankful for a wonderful attendance by our members!

Our chapter meeting in October was graciously hosted by Austin FC where we were able to tour the stadium and discuss security and risk procedures for sporting facilities and events.

NOVEMBER
Our second Young Professionals event for the year was a huge success. We had a great turnout at our Beer 'N Bingo night in support of the young professionals in ATX. Thank you to Voltek Systems for your generosity in hosting us and to all our sponsors who made it such a success! We look forward to more fun events in 2022!

Our November chapter meeting was hosted by our friends at Overhaul where we were able to discuss Global Cargo Theft Trends and Supply Chain Integrity Technology Trends. We had fantastic engagement from our members and really enjoyed hearing about this unique company and technology used to keep our supply chain safe and secure.

DECEMBER
In December, we proudly supported Travis County Sheriff's Office Brown Santa Program during our Holiday Happy Hour. We were so thankful to hear from our Travis County representative and how the program gives back to the community and we had so many members donate in support of the program. Thank you all for your generosity and helping us give back a little something during the holidays!

ASIS INTERNATIONAL GLOBAL AND REGIONAL GOVERNANCE BOARDS
With the new calendar year, ASIS will induct its newest Global Board of Directors, as is customary.
